Marineman issue 5 hits the stores today and so far it's my favorite of all the issues, I hope you enjoy it!

I'm still chugging along with the mammoth double sized issue 6 -it's going to be a doozy with a fair amount of 'traditional' action for good measure.

Apparently, the only people who are eligible to vote for Marineman in the Eisners are fellow professionals! I know you'd all vote for Marineman if you could, and I really appreciate it!
So lets all cross our fingers and hope the pros in the biz have read and enjoyed Marineman as much as you and I have...

I'll look forward to reading your reactions to issue 5...

Cheers!

-Ian!

  1. Congratulations for the nomination ! and congratulations for that great book ! I'm from France and it's the first book I buy digitally (via comixology) because I can't wait to see it traduced (and I'm not even sure to see it one day in France...).
I have a question, is it "good" for you to sell the book digitally ? do you know how many "copies" you already sold digitally ?

I love your cartoony style ! Keep up the good work !!!

  2. Hi André,

    Thanks for the congrats!

I'm glad you are enjoying Marineman!

I think digital, singular issues or collected volumes are 'good' for me and Marineman, anything that helps bring awareness of the character to it's potential audience is a good thing!

Funny that you mention it, but I am currently discussing a French translation of the book with a French publisher. Nothing is finalized yet but it looks like it won't be long before you can read Marineman in French...

    I'll keep you posted.

Thanks for reading and collecting Marineman!

  3. Dear Mr. Churchill,

First of all I have congratulate you on your much deserved nomination!

"Marineman" is one of my favorite books, and I get excited every time I see that a new issue is about to come out. As a matter of fact, I just finished reading issue #5, and I have to say that it's probably my favorite so far.

Honestly, I didn't see that revalation coming at all, and I love it. Reminds me of the adventurous nature of "The Rocketeer" and the "Indiana Jones" series. Simply fun and gave me a big grin. Fantastic stuff.

One thing I'd really like to see more (and I hope comes in issue #6) is Jake's character. Back in issue #3 when Jake felt so betrayed I thought that was a great moment. Hope to see that developed a little more.

Anyway, I hope to see more "Marineman" books in the future after this run is over, and I'll definitely pick up the trade when it comes out!

  4. Hi Sam,

I'm so glad you enjoyed issue 5 and that you didn't see the plot twist coming! There was always a reason why he had blonde hair and blue eyes and why I was deliberately vague with my solicitations!

I wanted to capture that sense of not knowing what was going to happen next like you got in the old days before the internet and direct market solicitations.

Jake will be back in issue 6 and the next story arc is centered heavily around him.

Thanks for supporting the book and thanks in advance for picking up the trade.

    All the best,

    -Ian

  5. Wow! What a reveal. I am not sure if there are more misdirections to come, but I can not wait to find out in issue six. Very excited about the TPB in July too. There is so much to build on. Sorry to be greedy, but I hope the next mini-series is in the works.

  7. I just got issue 5 and had to read it right away. Great revelation, I really would not have predicted it. The whole story so far was really great. You really did a great job with Marineman so far and I can not wait for the next issue (double-sized, hooray).

The only thing which bothered me was in the flashback panel with the data of Hans Schaeffer and Eva Schmitz. The files are in correct german, I am german myself, but the height and the weight have the wrong measure. The height should be in meteres and the weight in kilogrammes. I can understand that it is for the american readership more easily to understand but it just looks wrong and not authentic.

Well, this is just a small thing in an overal great comic book. Keep up, your work. I really hope we get more Marineman in the future, it would be such a shame if not.

  9. Hi Nils,

I was trying to be as accurate as possible but I guess that slipped by me!

My question to you is - was Germany metric even in the 1930s - 40's?

England didn't convert over until the 1970's.

Thanks for the heads up and I hope you keep reading...

  11. I looked up on wikipedia and it said Germany converted to the metric system in 1872 but to be absolutely sure I asked my grandma (born 1933) and she said they had it already when she was young.

  12. Issue #5 was terrific, Ian! The art and story were excellent and it's definitely my favorite so far. I never saw the "reveal" coming and it has me eagerly awaiting issue #6. Marineman has rapidly become one of my favorite comics!

  13. Hi Nils,

Thanks for looking into that for me, and thanks to your Grandma too...!

If I get the time, I'll amend it for the trade.

  16. Hi Ian,
Been interested in "Marineman" ever since it's debut, mainly cause it shares some similarities to my character "KUDU MAN" my first creator owned book coming out later this year. The writing is well done and the style unique. As an artist I can understand the practical reasoning of changing your art style, I too am at heart a detail nut and it has hindered my speed greatly but am working on it while at the same time working with other styles. Just picked up issues 3 & 4, the origin issue was especially entertaining and had a hell of a wallop surprise revelation about our heroe....Great job-keep up the good work and continued best success...

  17. Hi there 'The Man',

Thanks for picking up issues 3 and 4 of Marineman!

Actually, I didn't change my art style for practical reasons - I draw naturally in a more cartoony style and had to embrace it while recovering from a shoulder injury. Now that it's healed I can switch between styles at leisure but ironically, i'm probably still faster when I use the detailed style! Crazy, but true!

Good luck with your character's debut later this year, I hope it all goes to plan and I'll keep an eye out for it.

    All the best,

    -Ian

  19. FANTASTIC! I eagerly await each month's release of Marineman and it goes straight to the top of my reading pile. I really enjoy the artwork, colors and story. It's a FUN comic. When I get to the end of each comic, I'm wishing there were more pages to keep reading. Looking forward to the double-sized issue. Keep up the great work!

  20. Also a fan of Marineman and loving the storyline. Is there any way to buy a subscription? I in the US and have been buying the issues at my not-so-local comic book store and would like to buy a subscription so I am sure not to miss any issues. Any advice would be welcome. Otherwise, I have to buy a missed issue from Amazon.

  21. Loving the book! Been slowly getting people at my shop into it... sad that Diamond is sold out of half the issues, but I guess that means it's selling!

Any plans for future minis? Going to turn him in a "Hellboy" for image?!

Oh, and congrats on the Eisner nod!

  22. Hi. I just picked up issues 1-5 today and so far am through issue 2. I have to say I really enjoy the change to your style for this book and I was impressed with the writing and story as well. I hope Marineman lasts for many years.

  23. Hello Ian,
I just finished off issues 1 through 5 and the whole story was an instant success for me. I LOVE IT! After reading your thoughts on your affinity for all things oceanic, I was even more connected to the character, mainly because I have shared those same aquatic feelings since I was a wee lad. I've always been fascinated by the underwater world, usually taking my licks (even today) for being an Aquaman fan while those around me were convinced Batman and Wolverine were superior. All I have to say is thank you for Marineman! It's great to see your dream come true in publishing this title and not only that, but it's a very functional story with vibrant artwork. It has surpassed Haunt as my favorite comic book!

  24. Hi Joe,

    Thanks for your comments!

I'm glad you said 'fun' because that's the feeling I've been trying to evoke and it would seem to have come across judging by your reaction!

Thanks for taking the time to post,

    All the best,

    -Ian!

  25. Hi there HoneyHound,

There isn't a subscription available I'm afraid, but I'm told that Diamond Distributors still have copies at their warehouse so your not - so - local - comic book store should still be able to order you the issues you need.

Failing that, Marineman is available on Comixology for viewing on your mobile device such as iphone, ipad or equivalent devices.

I hope that helps and thank you for reading Marineman!

    All the best,

    -Ian

  26. Hi John,

    Thanks for the encouragement!

Also, thanks for picking up issues 1 - 5, I hope you enjoy reading them and don't see the twist in issue 5 coming!

One way or another, Marineman WILL last for years to come!

    -Ian!

  27. Hello Gregg,

As long as he stays in the water, Aquaman is FAR superior to Batman and Wolverine!

I know I'm biased, but I think Marineman is cooler than Aquaman although I'm sure Geoff Johns would have something to say about that!

It's good to hear from a like minded ocean nut and to say Marineman has surpassed Haunt in your opinion is praise indeed!

    Thanks for posting,

    All the best,

    -Ian
